Zen Planner

A simple point of sale was a top feature request from studios managed by the Zen Planner suite. The studios wanted a quick and easy way to sell items and the ability to credit or deduct money from students' accounts.

To fulfill that request, I set out to research the scenarios for all the different users and how to integrate the new feature and its requirements to the software suite.

Research

The users making purchases fit into two categories: existing members and guests. Payment options could be credit cards or cash.

I conducted customer interviews with the studio owners and staff employees to uncover their pain points and needs. One finding was the risk of long lines and late students in studios where there was only one device available for check-ins and sales. The process needed to be fast and streamlined.

A critical pain point was to locate existing members' accounts to start a purchase. It was not practical for studios with hundreds of students to display a list or to have an option to browse for an existing name. The app's performance was also affected by server requests attempting to show too many names at once.

Solution

When the user selects "Checkout," a dialog box with only two options appears: "Search for Existing People and Checkout" or "Checkout as a Guest." An existing student with an account should be able to purchase in just a few steps.
